Fourth Environmental Health Science Cluster Hire Joins NC State and CHHE

Dr. Mike Cowley joined North Carolina State University in October 2014 as a Chancellor’s Faculty Excellence Program cluster hire in Environmental Health Science. He is a member of the interdisciplinary Center for Human Health and the Environment (CHHE), and an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences. The overall goal of Dr Cowley’s work is to understand how environmental factors, such as diet, can influence our health by modulating gene activity. For example, we know that over-nutrition can lead to obesity and related health complications, but what are the biological mechanisms underpinning this relationship? Can we apply this knowledge to help design novel therapeutic strategies? Dr Cowley draws on his expertise in molecular genetics, epigenetics and developmental biology to understand more about how environmental cues can affect health.
