At the request of Cumberland County Extension employees, the CEC, in partnership with DHHS, DEQ, and county health officials, hosted a community forum on PFAS contamination in local gardens. Presentations were given by Katy May (NC State) and Dr. Pingping Meng (East Carolina University), providing an overview of PFAS in the Fayetteville area and the findings of Dr. Meng’s recent paper, Residential Garden Produce Harvested Near a Fluorochemical Manufacturer in North Carolina Can Be An Important Fluoroether Exposure Pathway. A Q&A session followed, where panelists, Drs. Meng, Detlef Knappe, Khara Grieger, Owen Duckworth, Kennedy Holt (NC DHHS), Michael Scott (NCDEQ), and Lacey Brown addressed questions and concerns from the audience. The event was very well attended and received attention from local news sources. Questions and feedback from attendees are being compiled to create an FAQ for county extension officials and the general public.
